Before the move

Make a list for us!
Write down all the services you need or may need from your movers, including: items needing to be moved, any packing materials needed, items being packed and unpacked by us, items to be disassembled and reassembled, and special services such as handling a piano, antiques, light fixtures, appliances, crating service, etc. If something is fragile or needs special care, let them know!

Inquire about all requirements and restrictions at both the pick-up and delivery locations, such as building protection, days and hours in which access is not permitted, parking restrictions, etc. Contact the building management or super, when applicable. Some building managements require moving companies to show a "Certificate of Insurance." These certificates protect the building against liability for damage. Make sure that your moving company knows all the restrictions and can meet all the requirements.

Decide how you are going to move your vehicle(s), either by driving or via a moving company.

Get an estimate from 3-5 moving companies.
If your move is large, ask about free on-site estimates and ask for it in writing. Make sure that all services requested are included in the proposal. Be sure to inquire about the ways you may insure your move. Ask whether the pick-up and delivery dates (or time-frame for delivery) are guaranteed.

When you choose a moving company, take into consideration not only the price, but the services included in the price, as well as the movers' reputation. Do a good share of research on your moving company before you confirm with them.

Reserve a moving day with your moving company.
Make sure that pick-up and delivery dates are guaranteed by your moving company. If you are uncertain about your exact moving date, ask your moving representative to reserve a speculative date and explain that there is a chance it may be changed.

Make arrangements for transporting your pets and plants.

Call your moving company and confirm a few days before the move.

Make sure you:

Make arrangements to have all utilities shut off (gas, electric, cable etc.)
Get rid of anything you don’t want to bring along on your move.
Fill out a change of address form.
Fill out an IRS change of address form.
If you’re moving out of state find out about auto licensing and registration
If you’re moving in state find, submit a change of address request for your driver’s license to the DMV.
Notify the kid’s schools of the move, and have their records transferred
Make arrangements to have all utilities turned on at your new home.
Make sure to mark any items you will be taken with you in the car or on the plane "Do Not Move."

Packing Tips:

Remember, movers are liable for damage to an item packed by you only when negligence in handling was the clear cause for this damage!

If you choose to pack yourself, the following tips may be helpful:

Loose Items: All loose items must be placed in boxes.
Heavy and Light Items: Heavy items, such as books, should be placed in small boxes. Light items, such as linens, may be placed in larger boxes.
Breakables (Dishes, etc.): Make sure to cushion the bottom of the box before placing any breakables in. Wrap each item separately, using packing paper or newspaper, make sure that one item does not touch the other. Bubble-wrap may be used for special pieces. Note box as fragile.
Side Tables and Small Cabinets: May remain full only if they are packed with light items, such as linens or clothing.
Desks, Large and Antique Cabinets: All drawers must be emptied.
File Cabinets: If there are no stairs in your move, all vertical file cabinets will be moved with their contents and do not need to be emptied. Lateral file cabinets, up to two drawers high, will be moved with contents; all drawers above the second drawer must be emptied. If your move involves stairs, only two-drawer vertical file cabinets may remain full.
Bookcases and Wall Units: All bookcases and wall units must be emptied. The movers will separately pack all loose shelves.
Computers and other electronics: Back-up computers. Unplug and mark the different wires to ensure easy reconnection. Pack well in a heavy-duty box using cushioning materials.
Artwork and Mirrors: Artwork, such as statues and small wall hangings, should be placed in boxes and noted as fragile. All medium and large hanging artwork should be packed in special picture boxes or crated.
Table Lamps: Separate shades, bulbs, and bases before packing. Note the box as fragile.
DO NOT PACK: Money, jewelry, important papers, perishable items and flammable materials.
Moving is a good opportunity to get rid of unneeded items, such as old clothes, magazines, unused toys, dishes, etc. Leave these items behind. It will save you money and time, as well as provide you with a fresh start and more space at your new home. Label or mark each box with the proper room for easy placement at delivery. Mark boxes containing fragile items in large easy to read letters, "FRAGILE."

On Moving Day: Each move is supervised directly by a Foreman. The Foreman is in charge of the other movers and is responsible for fulfilling the moving agreement in a professional and smooth manner. Refer to the Foreman with all remarks, questions and last minutes requests. Be sure to receive copies of the "Order for Service" and the "Bill of Lading," before the move is started. Make sure the movers have directions to their destination. While unloading, tell the movers the new location of every item. Many customers prepare a "Floor Plan," prior to the move. If you have one, give a copy to the movers. Placing all furniture and boxes in their new location will save you valuable time and make your moving-in process smoother.

After the Move: Start unpacking and get adjusted to your new home. Be sure to check that everything arrived to the new location. Note any damages that may have occurred to your property and report them to your moving company. We wish you good luck!
